Strength training and Metabolism

There are many reasons to do strength training: it helps build strong muscles, aids in injury prevention, increases bone density, lowers the risk of certain diseases, boosts your metabolism, mental health and your self esteem.

Muscle mass burns about 3 times more calories than fat. Building muscle mass will increase the body’s metabolic rate.

Your metabolism stays elevated even after finishing your workout due to the EPOC effect: post exercise oxygen consumption. Your body will keep burning more calories, even once you stopped working. The time and rate depends on the intensity and energy expenditure of your workout. The higher intensity your workout , the longer will be the EPOC effect and the more calories you. will burn.

As we age, we loose muscle mass. We can prevent that by regular strength workout routines and healthy nutrition.

The best way to build muscle mass and boost your metabolism is by

  • doing regular strength workouts: 2 - 3 times per week

  • performing compound movements - exercises that involve more muscle groups

  • lifting heavy enough to gain muscle mass

Enjoy your strength training!
