Physical activity has a lot of health benefits. Whether you do cardio or strength, high or low intensity workouts, regular physical activity is associated with positive changes in the heart. . 


Any exercise that increases your heart rate, using large muscle groups in a repetitive and rhythmic manner is defined as a cardio activity. 

Strength training is any form of exercise where you use your bodyweight or added resistance in the form of various equipment to apply stress on your muscles, making them work against the extra weight. One benefit of strength training is increased metabolism and calorie burn even after you have done your workout.

Benefits associated with cardio and strength training are:

  • Help lower your blood pressure

  • Help lower your resting heart rate

  • Improve cholesterol profile - decreasing LDL - the bad cholesterol and increasing HDL - the good cholesterol

  • Improve blood sugar control, lowering your risk of insulin resistance and diabetes

  • Help with weight management - being overweight can increase your risk of high blood pressure or diabetes, which can contribute to various illnesses, also the extra weight puts extra stress on your heart, joints, making it harder to get through everyday activities

  • Help reduce stress by producing the feel good DOSE hormones

  • Help you get through your daily activities and live independently longer

The recommended minimal amount of physical activity is:

  • strength training at least twice a week

  • 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise each week

The bottom line is that any kind of regular physical activity keeps you healthier, happier longer.
